In After Empire, we asked “What does empire mean to you and how do you foresee its limits?” Editor-in-Chief David Reid introduces us to the historiography of the course of empire; in our Person-to-Person interview, Franco-Algerian artist Zineb Sedira helps us visualize the forces of empire at work through her mixed media art works; a work of short fiction by sci-fi writer Jeff Hewitt imagines a Los Angeles of the future where boundaries are nebulous and cultural colonization is ever-apparent; in Contact Sheet, two California photographers juxtapose key features of the state—its landscape and its laborers.
